Quiet Currents

Project type

Quiet Currents

Medium: Acrylic on canvas
Quiet Currents is a meditative abstract work that evokes the stillness and subtle movement of deep water or an open horizon. Layered veils of blue, teal, and soft grey drift horizontally across the surface, creating a gentle sense of flow and atmospheric depth.
Delicate incised markings and faint submerged symbols emerge and recede within the layers, suggesting fragments of memory or distant signals carried beneath the surface. The restrained palette and softened contrasts give the work a spacious, introspective quality, inviting slow looking and quiet reflection.

Inspiration:
This painting was inspired by the quiet rhythms of water and the emotional states they mirror - calm tides, deep lakes, and moments of inner stillness where thoughts move slowly and softly. I was drawn to the idea of undercurrents: feelings and memories that remain mostly unseen yet shape our inner landscape. The horizontal movement reflects breath, tide, and time passing gently without urgency.

Artist Statement:
My work explores layering and texture as metaphors for memory, depth, and emotional presence. Using acrylic washes, carving, and subtle mark-making, I build surfaces that allow earlier gestures to remain visible. In Quiet Currents, I wanted the surface to feel fluid and contemplative - like water holding reflections and hidden meanings at once. Each layer becomes a quiet record of movement, time, and inner resonance.
